Golconda Fort

Golconda Fort was built on a hill in 1143 AD & was strengthened & enlarged between 14th & 17th centuries. It has a chequered history with all the trappings of intrigue & murders. It has palaces, mosques, a hilltop pavilion & magnificent tombs. The founder of the Qutb Shahi dynasty Sultan Quli was murdered at the behest of his son. The last of the Qutb Shahis, Abul Hassan was betrayed by his lieutenants, leading to the fall of the impregnable Golconda in the hands of the moghals under Aurangzeb in 1687. The fort is famous for its acoustics & ingenious water supply & drainage system.

Hyderabad - The Old City

Or shall we say the real Hyderabad? The part of town that has all the monuments that we are all so proud of, all the wares that we are so famous for, and all the folks that make us so unique! AMINUDDIN KHAN profiles the old city, as we know it.

Hyderabad was originally sited on the south side of the Musi river and built to reflect Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah's splendor and style of governance. The city has now spread widely in all directions - north across the river, eastwards and westwards. The area south of the Musi, the original Hyderabad, is what is referred to as the Old City or shehar (city) by the populace. Its nucleus is the Charminar, a famed landmark and the symbol of the city. With its four minarets and small mosque on the roof, the Charminar is as meaningful to the locals as perhaps the Arc de Triomphe is to the citizens of Paris.

The best time of year to visit Hyderabad is winter, i.e. from the beginning of November to the end of February.

AMINUDDIN KHAN traces the evolution of this city through its days of the Qutb Shahis, the mughals and the Asaf Jahis into the present.Hyderabad was founded in 1586 by Mohammed Quli, fifth Sultan of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty of Golconda. Today, it is the capital of the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city has had its ups and downs. After the fall of the Qutb Shahis to the Mughal power, it was ruined and neglected. Between 1687 and 1724, it remained under Mughal control. In 1724 the Mughal Governor, Nizam-ul-Mulk started building the city wall. In the same year, as the mighty Mughal empire began to disintegrate, he assumed autonomy in the Deccan and founded the Asaf Jahi dynasty that was to rule for two hundred years. But Nizam-ul-Mulk's capital was Aurangabad. Hyderabad's revival began after 1763 when Nizam Ali Khan, Nizam-ul-Mulk's son and successor, shifted the capital back to where it had been in Qutb Shahi times. The Golconda Fort - Where It All StartedHyderabad has grown enormously over four hundred years. Originally sited on the south side of the Musi river and built to reflect Sultan Mohammed Quli Qutb Shah's splendor and style of governance, the city has spread widely in all directions - north across the river, eastwards and westwards. Today it has a population of over four million.Join fullHYD for the most comprehensive tour of the city!"
